Stream Blu-ray movies to Roku box using Plex channel

The Roku players are tiny devices without any hard drives, designed specifically to play back video over the network on your TV set. Till now, Roku box is still a special existence form with peculiar format acceptance. Let's focus on ripping and streaming Blu-ray movies to Roku via Plex with the fast Blu-ray to Roku ripper in the following text.

How to Rip and Stream Blu-ray movies to Roku box using Plex channel?

- I'd like to convert my Blu-ray into a target format for use on a Plex server to my Roku box using the Plex channel. What can I do before I can drag the file to the Roku box and play the movie?

Keep in mind that the Roku/Plex only supports H.264 MPEG-4 certain common video formats. The Blu-ray disc or video files should be compatible with Roku box both in formats and specifications. In order to stream Blu-ray from computer to Roku via Plex channel, the first thing you should do is to rip/convert Blu-ray to Roku with some professional Blu-ray ripping program, such as Pavtube BDMagic for Mac (or ByteCopy for Mac).

Overall, these two Blu-ray to Roku/Plex rippers can can help you finish Blu-ray conversion bypassing copy protection without any hassle. With them, you can convert Blu-ray to almost all regular video formats like MP4, MOV, MKV, FLV, WMV, AVI, etc. and even extract MP3, WMA, FLAC, OGG, etc. audio from Blu-ray  movies. What’s more, it allows you to copy your Blu-ray to hard drive with original structure or main movie only. (Here is a review for you)Rip and stream Blu-ray for use on Plex server to Roku box via Plex channel

Step 1. Insert Blu-ray disc into the BD drive, on best Blu-ray to Roku Converter, click “load Blu-ray” button. It doesn’t necessarily to be a Blu-ray optical media, it can also be an Blu-ray folder or ISO files to be converted to playable digital file format.

Step 2. Click Format bar, here I suggest you choose HD Video > H.264 HD Video(*.mp4). Of course you can choose other output formats like MKV from the output format list as long as they are compatible with the Roku media player/Plex. Also you can rip Blu-ray, DVD to Plasma TV and Amazon Fire TV via Plex.

Tip:

a. If you like to tweak a little, in the settings, you are allowed to change the frame rate, resolution, bitrate and other specifications of the videos, if the tech terms look taunting to you, proceed to the next step. After that, you can click on "Save as" to rename the profile, such as "Roku or Plex (*.mp4)". Next time, you can easily find it in "Custom" category.

b. Before conversion, you may want to trim the unnecessary parts from the movie.

Step 3. Click Convert to rip Blu-ray movie to MP4/MKV for Roku. After the conversion, drag a converted movie to log in Plex server and add them to the library of Plex. Then set up Plex channel run on Roku media player, you can freely watch Blu-ray with Roku player!

Plex Media Server – Third Party App, For the First Time

We at Synology are dedicated to developing new features and delivering added value to our products, however, we also want to encourage 3rd-party software developers to explore more of the potential of DiskStation. If this is your case, you can find our developer guide of 3rd-party apps running on DiskStation.

Today, I would like to introduce Plex Media Server – a solution for your local and online media, which seamlessly connects your Plex clients. Thanks to Plex's great work, Plex Media Server is available on x86-based DiskStation. You can get it in the Package Center in DSM directly.

Plex Media Server is not only a good application for home theatres; it is also the first package for Synology DiskStation developed by 3rd-party developers. This means a lot to us – DiskStation is becoming a platform for all software developers, and we hope that in the future more of them will join this "eco-system" and deliver more versatile applications on to our platform: DSM on Synology DiskStation.

How does Plex Media Server work?

In my previous blog post, we talked about hosting your own personal multimedia cloud on DiskStation, enabling you for example to watch your favorite movie collections, anytime, anywhere. So what's new with Plex Media Server on your DiskStation? Well you can watch movies with the client – Plex Media Center on Windows & Mac, and more importantly, on iPad, iPhone and Android devices with the paid app. A version for Windows Phone is also on its way. I've tried Plex for a couple of weeks, and I would like to share my impressions and favorite features on Plex Media Server.

Collecting Movie Information Online Automatically

How many times have you downloaded lots of movie files, created a lot of folders to sort these videos, then had a difficult time to browse and find the movie you want, the ones you've already watched and those you haven't? Well, now that's just a bad memory: Plex automatically searches an online database, and with just the filename of the movie, retrieves the introduction, rating, genre and director, as well as recording what you've watched and what you haven't.

Watching Videos on iPad (as well as iPhone & Android devices)

I often like to just lie back in bed and watch movies on my (new) iPad. With Plex, I can do just that! Watching all of my movies on my iPad becomes easy, no matter which video format: AVI, MKV or MP4, Plex Media Server handles the transcoding for me. It makes things much simpler, doesn't it? Now I can really lie back, relax and enjoy the movie.

Learn>> Plex Supported Video Formats | How to set up Plex Media Server | Plex Problems and Solutions...

Last but not least, when I have to stop watching a movie before the end, Plex is able to keep track of where I stopped and will prompt me to continue watching it from there when I resume watching.

After spending the whole weekend watching movies on my iPad and Plex Media Center on my computer, Plex really left me with a great feeling. There are, however, some issues and limitations: for example, I've found that some movies with AAC 5.1 audio codec sometimes may not sync with videos during playback; With Plex Media Server running on DiskStation (like DS1512+), video transcoding by enabling subtitles puts too much CPU load on the device – another limitation found so far. However, I personally like the whole idea of Plex Media Server and hopefully in the future all of us will have a great "personal movie cloud" experience!
